KAUST’s Science Festival to inspire and engage Saudi youth concludes successfully

The event was designed to spread scientific knowledge and engage with local communities

Thuwal, KSA-: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology’s (KAUST) first-ever Science Festival – held at the Thuwal Corniche to inspire the next generation of scientific talent – has received unprecedented success. The aim of the event, which will now be held annually, has been to spread scientific knowledge and engage with local communities in line with Vision 2030’s goal of building a knowledge-based economy.

Held between January 20 and 22, the event was successfully organized and managed by the Strategic National Advancement department’s Social Responsibility team and the Provost’s Office of Culture, Enrichment and Engagement.

More than 7,000 visitors – twice the number anticipated based on registered attendees – were welcomed and had the opportunity to learn about science, technology, and innovation from KAUST’s research experts and leading scientists.

A wide range of events and activities were in store at the festival including science exhibits, evening science shows, STEAM challenges for children and science projects on display from the university’s students – with a key focus on KAUST’s five research pillars: food, energy, water, environment and digital.

Dr. Najah Ashry, Strategic National Advancement, Vice President, commented: “KAUST is a catalyst for innovation, economic development and social prosperity, and is fully aligned with the goals of Vision 2030 – a blueprint designed by the Saudi leadership to transform the economy. As a key player in the realm of scientific research and technology, we consider it a responsibility to spread knowledge and engage with local communities across Saudi Arabia and the region at large. We are beyond humbled by the phenomenal response the first edition of our Science Festival has received, and particularly proud of the Strategic National Advancement team at KAUST who made this happen. We look forward to holding this event on an annual basis and inspire the future generation of scientists to break barriers and set new milestones for Saudi Arabia.”

Maha Aldubayan, Social Responsibility Director, added on the festival’s success: “We are positively overwhelmed by how successful our Science Festival has been. Twice as many visitors than expected were in attendance which highlights how much interest and potential there is in the field of science and technology amongst the youth – the next generation of scientific minds, thinkers, and innovators. Our aim is to provide them with a creative environment to explore, be inspired and unlock the power of science to help build a knowledge-based economy. At this year’s event, we engaged with the Thuwal community primarily, but at our upcoming festivals which will be held annually, we will bring science to other local communities to inspire young minds to explore a career in this exciting field.”

The Science Festival is an expansion of the Winter Enrichment Program’s Science Fair, which was held on KAUST premises in previous years. It will now be recognized as a national event, open to local communities beyond the university.
