POWER fans in Saudi Arabia get ready as the next chapter of the gritty crime-drama is back! The eagerly awaited “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is set to premiere on STARZPLAY, the leading subscription video on demand (SVOD) service in the Kingdom.
The gripping series wrapped up the sixth and final season in February last year. However, four spinoffs of the flagship TV show were planned. First came “Power Book II: Ghost” and now it’s time for the second prequel. Available for fans to enjoy at the same time as the US, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” premieres exclusively on STARZPLAY from July 19. STARZPLAY will be adding every new episode of the show on a weekly basis, the same time as it airs in the US.
And there’s more great news for Power fans. Ahead of the upcoming season one premiere, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” has been renewed for a second season by STARZ. The commission comes amidst strong demand for the upcoming premiere of the third book in the ever-expanding Power Universe franchise.
This latest spin-off, takes viewers to Jamaica in the 1990s to recount the early years of Kanan Stark, played by Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson in the original show. Partly narrated by 50 cent himself, the show is a sprawling family drama that revolves around the coming of age of Ghost and Tommy’s mentor, partner and adversary, who ultimately dies in a hail of gunfire in the eighth episode of Power’s penultimate season.
Much like the original Power, “Raising Kanan” explores themes of identity, violence, and legacy, but takes a deep dive into the pathology of family; the unique, complicated and fraught dynamic between parent and child, mother and father, brother and sister. The first season of “Raising Kanan” is an exploration of these betrayals, the secrets and lies that accompany them and the ways in which they fester, metastasise and ultimately erupt.
The overarching theme of this first season is, ‘You reap what you sow’. In other words, actions have consequences; betrayals are always uncovered; secrets are inevitably revealed; chickens come home to roost. Every character in “Raising Kanan” is hiding something. From the world, from each other, from themselves. And as the story unfolds, each of them grapple with the unintended and destructive consequences of the information they’ve hidden and withheld.
Viewers who haven’t yet discovered Power or simply want to relive the best moments of the visionary hit drama, all six seasons as well as the first spin off “Power Book II: Ghost” are available on STARZPLAY to watch anytime, anywhere and on any device.
The third book in the Power Universe stars Patina Miller (“Madam Secretary”, “The Hunger Games” franchise) as Raquel ‘Raq’ Thomas and Mekai Curtis in the titular role as Kanan Stark. The cast also includes Omar Epps (“House”, “Love and Basketball”), London Brown (“Ballers”), Malcolm Mays (“Them”, “Snowfall“), Hailey Kilgore (“Amazing Stories“), Joey Bada$$ (“Two Distant Strangers”), Toby Sandeman (“The Royals”), Shanley Caswell (“The Conjuring”) and Lovie Simone (“The Craft: Legacy”) with Quincy Brown (“Dope”) recurring. Antonio Ortiz (“High Fidelity“, “The Sinner“) has been upped to a series regular role returning as Shawn ‘Famous’ Figueroa in the second season.
Sascha Penn returns as creator and showrunner and will continue executive producing alongside Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson and Courtney A. Kemp.
